"Staying active has value beyond meeting physical needs, becoming involved or continuing hobbies is important for well-being."

Participating in leisure activities benefits your physical and mental health and overall life satisfaction. You're healthier, happier and more cheerful. You will enjoy life more.

With proper treatment, adults with mental illnesses can improve their quality of life and remain productive members of the community in which they live. Adults are encouraged to participate in activities that challenge them physically, mentally, and spiritually. New activities, hobbies and exercise can be effective anti-depressants. You can feed your spirituality by simply making sure that you are involved in hobbies or other interests that fulfill you, increase your happiness and give you a sense of inner peace and power. For some people that can be painting, ballroom dancing or performing a charitable work.

People benefit from hobbies by:

  • Bringing joy and laughter to daily life;
  • Giving the person something to do, talk about and think about, other than him or herself;
  • Heightens self confidence, self esteem and a sense of achievement;
  • Boosts overall morale;
  • Stimulates exercise and activity;
  • Helps people cope with illness, loss, and depression;
  • Lowers stress levels;
  • Encourages verbal skills;
  • Decreases anxiety, confusion, fatigue, and tension.

Occupational Therapy helps people live more productive lives. It enables people with diablities to carry out essential activities, with the aim of maintaining or improving independence.

Occupation means any way in which people spend their time from personal care (washing, dressing, toileting); to productivity (paid or unpaid work, housework, education); to leisure (games, sports, hobbies, social activities).

Occupational therapy is not just for the physically disabled people - Occuaptional Therapists (OT's) also support people with learning disabliities and people who have a mental illness or conditions such as anxiety, stress or depression.

Occupational therapy helps you to be more independent in a range of activities - from day to day tasks such as personal care, to work and leisure activities. OT's can advise on ways to be more safe, improve your mobility around your home, to enable you to prepare meals, get in/out of bed, manage the steps and stairs and enabling your caregiver to care for you.

The OT can help you with hobbies and interests. If hobbies become difficult, or you never had a hobby, the OT can help you discover a hobby that is suitable for you. Too often people give up cherished activities they could continue if they'd look into some modifications. For example: you could use a bookstand, card or dominoes holder or have a paintbrush adapted so you can hold it. Gardening tools can also be adapted.

To be referred to an Occupational Therapist, visit with your physician and he/she can make the necessary referrals.
